Prove it!

WELCOME to my newsletter, Reader! I've dubbed it From My Keyboard to Your Screen. That's FMKTYS for short. Catchy, isn't it? I send it out periodically to share info about resume writing, job searching, careers, cover letters, LinkedIn, and the like, usually with a link to my blog or other resources for additional reading. If you like it, why not forward it to a friend? OK, let's get into it...

I come to you today with a two-word challenge:

PROVE IT.

Believe it or not, this post was inspired by hotel shampoo. Read today's blog post to see pictures and read the explanation.

TL;DR: It's one thing to claim on your resume that you have a certain skill or attribute, but it's quite another - and it's important - to offer support illustrating how you've applied that skill or attribute in a work setting. There is simply no better way to level-up your resume, transforming it from an itemized receipt into a Career Marketing Document that clearly conveys your value proposition to hiring managers.

I've got a freebie for you! Click here to download a PDF worksheet that will help you create your own STAR scenarios - useful not only for resume and LinkedIn content but also good to have ready when you're interviewing. (There's also a link to it in the blog post.)

Until next time...

Hi, Reader! Did you know that LinkedIn profiles with an All-Star designation are 40x(!) more likely to be found in searches? All-Star profiles are 100% complete and have at least 50 connections. How can you tell if yours is an All-Star profile? LinkedIn shows member their own private "profile meter" (it's under Me > View Profile > Suggested For You). No one else can see your meter. Everyone starts off as a beginner. Once you add all the recommended sections, you’ll receive an All-star profile...

Hello, again! I want to share another way you can use LinkedIn in your targeted job search. With roles posted on LinkedIn drawing hundreds of applications, how can you be one of the 5-10 people selected to interview? Of course (ahem), you must have a solid resume and a well-written cover letter. And, your LinkedIn profile should be current and keyworded. But here’s a way to greatly improve your odds and position yourself for selection: Build a relationship with the hiring manager. How, you...

Hi there, Reader! I've got a quick interviewing pro tip for you. It's a way to ensure you'll be focused on the matter at hand. Of course, by now we all know that it’s important to eliminate potential distractions when interviewing. That means don’t just silence your phone - put it on Do Not Disturb or, better yet, turn it completely off. But have you made sure your Smart Watch is also properly silenced? I’m talking about no notifications, no screens lighting up. The whole shebang. For my...
